Description:

The Jamestown Settlement was the country's first permanent colony, a band of 104 Englishmen who arrived on the James River in 1607, 13 years prior to the Pilgrims. Today, the site of the colony is a learning center with film and gallery exhibits, live historical reenactments, life-size recreations of the colonists' fort and a village of the Powhatan tribe, and even replicas of the settlers' three ships that visitors can actually board. The Settlement lies along the waterfront about six miles southwest of downtown, right above the west end of Colonial National Historical Park.
